Wimbledon / Euro 2008 Thoughts
Here are 10 random thoughts from yours truly on this year’s Wimbledon and Euro 2008 tournaments.
Wimbledon:
1) Really, Novak Djokovic? You are going to talk crap about Roger Federer and claim that he’s vulnerable, and then get bounced in the second round? OK, Marat Safin is a good player who shouldn’t be ranked as low as is he is, but if you really want to be boastful in the media and proclaim yourself ready to take down one of the game’s greats, you should probably do better than getting bounced before the first weekend.
2) Ashley Harkleroad may have lost to Amelie Mauresmo, but what everyone REALLY cares about is her upcoming feature in Playboy next month . Good grief, she’s hot.
3) I’m sick and tired of the Williams sisters. Did anyone else see Serena talking about the sports jacket she designed and describing it as “delectable?” The sooner they retire, the better.
4) ESPN’s new format for posting scores during match play is extremely confusing. They should go back to the boxes stating the score from each set next to the player’s name, instead of trying to fit everything on one line.
5) Picks to win it all: Roger Federer (for the 6th consecutive year) over Rafael Nadal, and Maria Sharapova over Ana Ivanovic. My feeling is that although Rafa pushed Federer to the brink last year, Roger will be hellbent on defending his turf and up his game considerably in his next meeting with Nadal. And I’m going with Sharapova because the top player with the biggest weapons usually wins on grass.
Euro 2008:
1) Most dominating performance of the tournament so far: David Villa’s hat trick for Spain in the opening game of group play against Russia. The Russians, with their wide-open style of play, will be hard pressed to contain the extremely fast strikers for Spain in today’s semifinals.
2) Best goalie: Gianluigi Buffon played out of his mind for as long as Italy was in the tournament, but his defenders are crap and let him down big time on numerous occasions.

Cristiano Ronaldo. The Alex Rodriguez of professional soccer.
3) For me, the most fun team in the tournament to watch is Russia. With their all-out attacking style, their games definitely don’t fit the stereotype of boring soccer. Arshavin is one of the top strikers in the world and watching him being able to work his magic has been a treat.
4) Watching Turkey make comeback after comeback before gracefully bowing out yesterday in a thriller against Germany was amazing. Ravaged by injuries and suspensions, the Turks took down heavy favorites one by one in dramatic fashion that was nearly on par with some of the Cinderella stories you see in the NCAA Tournament.
5) Pick to win it: Germany. I know this isn’t exactly a bold pick seeing how Germany has already reached the final, but I think they have the experience (Ballack, Klose) combined with the youngsters (Podolski, Lahm) to really dominate on Sunday.
