Movie Review: Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
I know this movie’s already been in and out of the theaters earlier this year, but I just saw it the other day and needed to put my thoughts down about it. I’ll try my best not to spoil it completely for those who haven’t seen it, but there will be certain plot spoilers contained in this post.
Harold and Kumar’s 2nd movie takes up right where the first one left off: Harold is hellbent on following the exceedingly hot girl in his apartment complex, Maria, as she travels to Amsterdam. However, Harold and Kumar’s European excursion ends up abruptly, as the two are detained for having weed on the airplane, and are sent to Guantanamo Bay by a Homeland Security official who let’s just say is pretty racist… and leave it at that. The name of the movie is slightly misleading, as Harold and Kumar spent a grand total of about five minutes of the movie at the detention camp before getting out to resume their shenanigans. But other than that small criticism, the movie basically follows the same format as the first one. Crazy marijuana-induced hallucinations, awkward situations with really hot women who live in very rural areas amidst weird living circumstances, Neil Patrick Harris sightings… yes they are all in this movie.

They spent five minutes in those jumpsuits.
One big plus in the second movie that wasn’t present in “White Castle”: the side subplot of Kumar’s first girlfriend, Vanessa, whose role is playing by the still-anonymous-but-not-for-long-if-she-keeps-it-up Danneel Harris. Not only is she a very likable character, but smoking hot (there’s no way in real life Kumar ever lands a chick like that, but this IS a movie for a reason). It gave this movie a little bit more focus, whereas the first one was just random scenes of ridiculousness that just happened to be funny.
The crazy girl from Wedding Crashers is no longer my favorite redhead.
Overall, I’m not sure I liked this movie more than the first one. They are very similar, but very different in many aspects. I found myself uttering “are you kidding me?” a few more times during this movie than during my first viewing of “White Castle,” but it was still thoroughly enjoyable , even if some scenes seemed totally unbelievable (i.e. falling off a cliff and surviving). I’m happy I didn’t shell out 10 bucks to go see this in the theater, but if this movie ever makes it to cable TV (think Comedy Central), I wouldn’t hesitate to leave it on if I found it during a channel surfing session.
